How to Read an Ingredient List —

The ingredient list is the only part of a skincare pack that isn't marketing. The front is written by a copywriter; the back is written to a legal standard. Once you can read it, you stop buying claims and start buying formulas.

How INCI lists are ordered — and where the rule stops

Ingredients are listed by descending concentration, so the first five or six make up most of the jar. But the rule stops at 1%: anything below 1% can be listed in any order.

That matters, because most actives are used at low percentages. A brand can headline a well-known active on the front while it sits near the bottom of the list, below the preservative — technically true, practically meaningless.

How to find the 1% line

Certain ingredients are almost always used below 1%: preservatives (phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate), chelators (disodium EDTA), pH adjusters (sodium hydroxide, citric acid), fragrance (parfum) and gums (xanthan gum). Find the first one of those. Roughly everything after it is under 1%.

Then look at where the advertised active sits. Above the line, it's a meaningful part of the formula. Below it, treat the front of the pack with caution.

What the first few ingredients tell you

  • Aqua (water) first is normal for creams and cleansers — it's the base an emulsion needs, not filler.
  • The next three or four are texture and skin feel — emollients, humectants like glycerin, thickeners.
  • A long list isn't bad and a short one isn't automatically clean. A stable, preserved emulsion needs a certain number of ingredients to exist.

Label claims worth knowing

  • Parfum / fragrance covers a whole blend under one word — the first entry to check if your skin reacts easily.
  • Preservatives are necessary. "Preservative-free" on a water-based cream is a warning, not a feature.
  • "Free-from" claims are marketing, not information. What's in a formula and at what level is what matters.
  • Natural doesn't mean gentle. Essential oils and citrus extracts are common irritants.
  • The symbols matter. The open-jar symbol with 12M or 6M is how long the product stays good after opening — not the expiry on the box.

A thirty-second check before you buy

  • Is the full list published before you pay? If not, that's the answer.
  • Where does the hero ingredient sit — above or below your estimated 1% line?
  • Is there fragrance, and does that suit your skin?
  • Is there a preservative system?
  • Does the period-after-opening match how fast you'd use it up?

What this has to do with price

Price is decided by the formula, the packaging, the testing behind it and production volume — not by where it was made. A well-built local formula can cost less than an imported one and be a better buy; a cheap formula in an expensive box is a worse one. The label is how you tell instead of guessing.

That's why we publish full ingredient lists on every product page rather than selected highlights: the Breath Facial Cleanser, the Day Cream SPF 50+ and the Night Cream.

Frequently asked questions

Why are ingredient names in Latin?

INCI is a single international naming system, so the same ingredient is written the same way everywhere — which is how you compare two products line by line.

If an active is last on the list, is the product useless?

Not necessarily — some actives work at very low percentages. But if it's the headline and sits below the preservative, the marketing is doing more work than the formula.

Are more actives better?

No. Crowded formulas usually contain a token amount of each. A few, at sensible levels in a stable base, do more.

Does "dermatologically tested" mean proven?

It usually means a tolerance test on a panel. That's about tolerance, not results, and the phrase isn't standardised.

What if a brand won't publish its full list?

Full disclosure is a legal requirement on the pack in most markets. A brand that won't show it online has made a choice about how much it wants you to know.
