Our Ingredients

The Only Charm — Ingredient Guide
Oct 9, 2026 · @The Only Charm
Why we publish this
Every ingredient in our three products was chosen for one climate: strong year-round sun, airborne dust, heat, and skin that is predominantly Fitzpatrick III–V — the phototypes most prone to melasma and post-blemish marks.
That single fact drove every decision below. Protection comes first because UV is the main driver of both pigmentation and visible ageing here. Brightening works on the pathway that produces pigment, not on the surface. The barrier gets rebuilt in every step, because sweat, dust and frequent washing strip it faster in this climate than in the ones most international formulas are designed for.
This guide covers the active and functional ingredients and what each one does. It is not the full INCI list — that is printed on each pack, in descending order, and is the authoritative list for anyone checking a specific ingredient.
Breath Facial Cleanser — cleansing without stripping
A cleanser is the easiest step to get wrong. Most foaming washes clean well because they are harsh, and the tightness afterwards is barrier damage, not cleanliness.
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate |
Amino-acid derived surfactant; cleans thoroughly without the harshness of SLS or SLES |
|
Coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside |
Plant-derived mild co-surfactants; build foam gently |
|
Cocamidopropyl betaine |
Softens the surfactant system and improves lather quality |
|
Salicylic acid (BHA) |
Oil-soluble, so it works inside oily pores; helps with congestion and blackheads |
|
Glycolic acid (AHA) |
Refreshes the surface; helps with dullness and rough texture |
|
Lactic acid (AHA) |
Milder exfoliating acid; also mildly hydrating |
|
Ceramide NP |
Replaces a barrier lipid that washing depletes |
|
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) |
Supports barrier function and helps regulate oil |
|
Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) |
Soothes and holds water in the skin |
|
Glycerin, betaine |
Humectants; keep skin comfortable after rinsing |
|
Polyquaternium-7 |
Conditioning agent; leaves skin smooth rather than squeaky |
|
Ubiquinone (CoQ10) |
Antioxidant support |
The two decisions that matter here. First, the surfactant base is sulfate-free and soap-free, at a mildly acidic pH close to the skin's own acid mantle (around 5.0–5.5) rather than the alkaline pH of soap. Second, the barrier ingredients are not decoration: ceramide NP, niacinamide, panthenol and glycerin deposit onto the skin during the wash, so you rinse off with a barrier that has been supported rather than stripped.
It also removes sunscreen and daily makeup in one step, which matters when you are applying SPF 50+ every morning.
Day Cream SPF 50+ — four jobs in one morning step
The most effective thing anyone can do for their skin each morning is protect it. This cream is built so that step also earns its place as a moisturiser and a brightening treatment.
Layer one — the filters
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Titanium dioxide |
Mineral filter; reflects and scatters UV |
|
Zinc oxide |
Mineral filter with strong UVA coverage; also mildly soothing |
|
Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate |
Organic UVB filter |
|
Ethylhexyl salicylate |
Organic UVB filter; helps dissolve other filters evenly |
|
Octocrylene |
Organic filter; stabilises the others |
|
Benzophenone-3 |
Broad UVA/UVB absorber |
This is a hybrid system — mineral and organic filters together. Mineral filters alone at SPF 50+ leave a white cast that is unacceptable on medium and deep skin tones, and a sunscreen nobody wears protects nobody. The hybrid approach is what makes daily use realistic.
Layer two — antioxidants beneath the filters
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Vitamin C (2-O-ethyl ascorbic acid) |
Stable vitamin C derivative; antioxidant, brightening, collagen cofactor |
|
Vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate) |
Fat-soluble antioxidant; works with vitamin C |
|
Ferulic acid |
Antioxidant that stabilises and amplifies the C and E pair |
No filter blocks all UV. Whatever passes through generates free radicals in the skin, and this trio is the published, well-studied answer to that residual load.
Layer three — brightening
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Alpha-arbutin |
Competitive tyrosinase inhibitor; acts on pigment production |
|
Kojic dipalmitate |
Ester of kojic acid, more stable in formula; tyrosinase inhibition |
|
Niacinamide |
Helps limit pigment transfer to surface skin cells |
Tyrosinase is the enzyme skin uses to make melanin. Inhibiting it addresses pigment at its source, which is why results build over weeks rather than appearing overnight.
Layer four — the base
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Collagen |
Film-forming hydrator; improves surface smoothness |
|
Shea butter |
Rich emollient; softens and cushions |
|
Sweet almond oil, coconut oil |
Emollient oils; nourish and improve spread |
|
Glycerin |
Humectant; draws water into the upper layers |
|
Panthenol |
Soothing, barrier-supporting |
|
Aloe vera |
Calming, light hydration |
|
Tea tree extract |
Minor supporting role in the base |
The base is what makes this a day cream rather than a sunscreen you tolerate: comfortable enough to replace a morning moisturiser, and smooth enough to take makeup over it.
Night Cream — renewal in the repair window
Skin does most of its repair work overnight, and the ingredients that work hardest are the ones that cannot be used in daylight. That is the whole logic of a separate night product.
Renewal
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Retinol |
The most extensively studied non-prescription anti-ageing active; supports cell turnover and the appearance of firmness and fine lines |
|
Vitamin C |
Antioxidant and brightening; also a collagen cofactor |
Retinol is light-sensitive and raises sun sensitivity, which is why it belongs at night and why the jar is opaque rather than clear.
Brightening, from three directions
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Licorice glabridin |
Tyrosinase inhibitor from licorice root; also calming |
|
Arbutin (from uva-ursi) |
Natural arbutin source; competitive tyrosinase inhibition |
|
Undecylenoyl phenylalanine |
Works further upstream, on the signal that triggers pigment production |
Pigment production has more than one step, so the formula addresses more than one. This is why the night cream, not the day cream, carries the heavier brightening load.
Surface renewal
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Glycolic acid (AHA) |
Loosens dead surface cells; improves the look of texture and tone |
|
Salicylic acid (BHA) |
Works into pores; helps with congestion |
|
Gluconolactone (PHA) |
Larger molecule, penetrates more slowly; gentler and also humectant |
The PHA is deliberate. Adding a gentler third acid lets the blend refine texture without the sting of a peel, which matters in a product also carrying retinol.
Hydration and barrier
|
Ingredient |
What it does |
|
Hyaluronic acid |
Holds many times its weight in water |
|
Ceramide 1 |
Barrier lipid; particularly important alongside retinol and acids |
|
Urea |
Humectant and mild keratolytic; softens rough, dry skin |
|
Glycerin, panthenol |
Hydration and soothing |
|
Shea butter, jojoba oil |
Emollients; cushion the richer night texture |
|
Dimethicone |
Smooths and reduces overnight water loss |
|
Zinc oxide |
Mildly soothing in this context, not a filter |
|
Tea tree extract |
Minor supporting role |
Actives that renew the skin also stress it. The hydration and barrier block is what makes a formula with retinol plus three acids tolerable night after night, rather than something skin can take for a week.
The ingredients that repeat, and why
Five ingredients appear in more than one product. That repetition is deliberate, not filler.
|
Ingredient |
Where |
Why it repeats |
|
Niacinamide |
Cleanser, day cream |
Supports the barrier and helps with tone in both a rinse-off and a leave-on context |
|
Panthenol |
All three |
Soothing and water-binding; useful at every stage of a routine |
|
Glycerin |
All three |
The most reliable humectant there is; no reason to leave it out of anything |
|
Ceramides |
Cleanser (NP), night cream (1) |
The barrier lipid most depleted by washing and by actives |
|
Vitamin C |
Day cream, night cream |
Antioxidant by day under the filters, brightening by night |
|
Salicylic + glycolic acid |
Cleanser, night cream |
Different roles: seconds of contact in the wash, hours of contact overnight |
The pattern. Barrier ingredients appear in every step because this climate attacks the barrier at every step — sun, heat, dust, sweat, and the frequent washing all of that demands. A routine that only repairs the barrier at night loses ground during the day.
Using actives sensibly
• Patch-test before first use of any product, on a small area, for a couple of days.
• Build retinol up gradually. Start the night cream two to three nights a week and increase as skin adjusts. Using it nightly from day one is the most common reason people conclude a retinol product does not suit them.
• Sunscreen is not optional alongside this routine. Retinol, AHAs and BHAs all raise sun sensitivity, and UV is what drives the pigment the brightening ingredients are working on. Without daily SPF, the night cream is working against the morning.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the night cream is not recommended. Retinoids are avoided as a precaution during pregnancy. The cleanser and day cream are unaffected.
• Give it 4 to 8 weeks. That is roughly one full skin renewal cycle, and brightening in particular builds slowly.
• If irritation appears, reduce frequency rather than stopping outright, and keep the barrier supported. Persistent irritation means stop and speak to a dermatologist.
These are cosmetic products. They are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition. For melasma, persistent acne or any diagnosed skin condition, see a dermatologist — a good routine supports that care, it does not replace it.
The full ingredient list for each product is printed on its pack in descending order of concentration. If you are avoiding a specific ingredient, that list is the one to check.
